Interview with Mr. Tushar Mistry, Principal Architect of Tushar Mistry Design Studio (TMDS)
Tushar Mistry has created a niche when it comes to design and space planning. As Principal Architect of Tushar Mistry Design Studio (TMDS).
Mistry is backed by 18 years of experience having learned and worked with Architect Alhad Raje, whom he considers his mentor, and Architect Reza Kabul.
Despite coming from a small town and facing the challenge of a lack of communication skills and exposure, Mistry has proven his ability in the field of construction and design, which he first had a love for as a young child.
Now holding a B. Arch from CEPT (Ahmedabad), an M. Arch from the Sydney School of Architecture, and a Diploma in IDD from L S Raheja School of Architecture, Mistry started his own company with TMDS, nine years ago.
The Mumbai-based Mistry envisions TMDS being among the top 5 designers in India and the top 100 worldwide within the next ten years.
TMDS has excelled in delivering the finished task and upholding his conviction of making the best use of resources by providing innovative designs, bringing in class, and a touch of their spirit and soul to the entire area.
Having successfully executed a variety of projects, such as residences, aspirational flats, hotels, and commercial spaces, Mistry sees himself as a guy on a mission but on an unlimited trip.
With the flair of Mistryโs designs, TMDS has successfully completed projects in and around Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Delhi, even attracting clientele from Dubai, Belgium, and Cameroon.
Mistryโs goal is to turn the concept into a production-ready design and manage the project to successful handover.
He does this by leading a formidable team of designers, architects, and project managers with expertise working on contracts of various sizes and budgets.
When not designing, Mistry also wears the hats of being a trained semi-classical singer, painter, and chef and also enjoys traveling.
A firm believer that post-COVID everyone had realised the importance of good living and lifestyle. Mistry sees the real estate boom as a testimonial of this and is assured that art and design have a bright future when it comes to designing spaces.

In an exclusive interview with Mr. Tushar Mistry, Principal Architect of Tushar Mistry Design Studio (TMDS) explains How he start his entrepreneurial journey.
Tell us a little about yourself
Tushar Mistry: I have completed my bachelorโs degree from CEPT University, Ahmedabad. After that, I went to Sydney, Australia, to pursue a masterโs in Architecture, followed by two years of diploma in interiors at L.S. Raheja College Of Arts & Commerce in Mumbai.
Please tell us a little about your entrepreneurial journey
Tushar Mistry: I belong to a family of businessmen. Therefore, entrepreneurship comes naturally to me. Before starting my venture, I worked with several renowned architects for a decade to acquire the proper knowledge and expertise to excel in this field as I never wanted to jump into this without knowing all the tricks of the trade.
It was the confidence that I received after working with some of the best names in the industry that helped me start my company.
After facing numerous challenges, I have successfully run my company for almost a decade now. I feel proud that I have been able to come this far. However, I have never stopped learning. I keep learning new things and sharpening my skills.
What was your mission at the outset?
Tushar Mistry: I strive to create something new every day. More than the destination, the journey intrigues me and pushes me to keep learning and creating.
What is unique about Tushar Mistry Designs?
Tushar Mistry: One unique thing about TMDS is its work culture. We allow our team members to travel, explore, and learn new things on the go.
This enables them to widen their horizons and be more creative. Moreover, every project is discussed among the team members and we together decide what needs to be done as every designer has his own perspective and would like his ideas and creative instincts to find a place in the overall design. This aspect of work culture and creative freedom reflect in our work.
Tell us more about your team and their mindset
Tushar Mistry: Our design ideas stand out from the rest because we donโt have a creative ceiling. We encourage our designers to be more creative and let their thoughts wander.
In addition, as an innovative team, we ensure every voice is being heard equally, and suggestions are taken sportingly.
Of course, there are disagreements. But we sort them out too. When two designers talk to each other without personal bias, it leads to an unbiased decision that creates something different and unique.
Besides, we do extensive research, use advanced tools and take sufficient time to develop our signature designs.
Remember, when your team members are happy and have healthy minds free of clutters, you achieve extraordinary designs.
Further, to define our working style, I can say we are versatile; we donโt stick to single types; we cater to every aspect of interior design and understand the mindsets and psychology of our clients.
Why did you choose designing and architecture as your career, how does it excite you?
Tushar Mistry: This is a very interesting question. While growing up, we changed many houses, and every time an interior designer was appointed to transform our space, I used to carefully look at his work.
It was fascinating to me. That is when I realized that I am inclined towards art and craft. And thatโs how the whole journey started.
So right from childhood, I wanted to be in a constructive and designing field where I could mould and improvise myself in art and craft.
Which has been your most challenging project?
Tushar Mistry: Prestige Jasdan Classic was the most complicated project. There will soon be a case study we will be presenting on it.
Basically, the timelines, grandeur of the project, and less availability of space to build it were the challenges that were faced, and we pushed ourselves way beyond our comfort zones. It was a great learning process. It was merely impossible, but we made it possible.
What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
Tushar Mistry: As human beings, we tend to make errors. Sometimes we get success, and sometimes, we fail. But it is important to keep going and keep creating. I learn from every mistake and then work on them to improve myself.
What was the inspiration behind turning into an entrepreneur?
Tushar Mistry: I always wanted to create something of my own, develop my style, create my path, and I saw entrepreneurship as the solution to my hunger. Also, I believe one should be responsible for their actions, both good and bad work.
Your success tips for young and aspiring entrepreneurs and budding architects?
Tushar Mistry: Give priority to ergonomics and functionality when it comes to interior design and architecture, or else it will lead to the failure of the entire project.
Next, understand your clientโs needs and deliver accordingly. Emptying your mind before meeting every new client for a new project is very important as every project needs to be seen differently.
But there is no need to worry; it comes with time. That comes through experience. Always listen because without listening, you fail to understand, and without understanding, you fail to give constructive input.
Be a good listener, empty your mind, think it through, understand the psychology of the client, the utility of the space, and never compromise on the operations over aesthetics. Aesthetics is something that can be achieved easily but not operations.
