An interview with Minnie Bhatt, founder and design director of Minnie Bhatt Design

In this exclusive interview, we delve into the creative journey of Minnie Bhatt, the founder and design director of Minnie Bhatt Design. Known for her distinctive design sensibilities, Minnie shares her insights into the world of interior design, her passion for creating transformative spaces, and the philosophy that drives her work.

Through her innovative approach, she has carved a niche for herself, blending functionality with aesthetics in every project she undertakes.

Can you share a bit about your journey into interior design? What inspired you to pursue this field?

Minnie Bhatt: My journey into interior design began over 28 years ago, fueled by a deep fascination with how spaces can shape emotions and experiences. I always loved the idea of storytelling through design, and that passion led me to pursue this field.

It all began unexpectedly when I was asked to design the interiors of Silver Beach Cafรฉ in Mumbai. It was my first foray into cafรฉ design, and the success of the project was a turning point in my career-it allowed me to bring a vision to life and realize the transformative power of design.ย  Over the years, Iโ€™ve worked on over 500 projects, and each one has added depth and meaning to my creative journey.

Can you walk us through your design process, from initial consultation to project completion?

Minnie Bhatt: My design process is deeply collaborative and detail-oriented. It starts with an in-depth consultation to understand the clientโ€™s vision, preferences, and the brandโ€™s ethos. I spend time studying the space, its functionality, and its potential.

From there, I conceptualize a design narrative that aligns with the brandโ€™s identity or the clientโ€™s personality. The execution phase involves meticulous attention to detail, ensuring every elementโ€”from lighting to materialsโ€”works harmoniously.

Regular site visits and open communication with clients and contractors ensure the project progresses seamlessly until completion.

Can you share a memorable project that pushed your creative boundaries?

Minnie Bhatt: Every project is unique, but designing the Burma Burma outlets across India has been particularly memorable. The challenge was to create a distinct yet cohesive identity for each location while staying true to the brandโ€™s rich cultural roots.

Drawing inspiration from Myanmarโ€™s rich traditions, such as the vibrant life around Inle Lake, I integrated authentic elements with modern design sensibilities.

Balancing authenticity with contemporary design sensibilities pushed my creative boundaries and resulted in spaces that are immersive and captivating.

What role does sustainability play in your designs, and how do you incorporate eco-friendly practices?

Minnie Bhatt: Sustainability is an essential part of my design philosophy. I consciously choose eco-friendly materials such as reclaimed wood, natural fibers, and non-toxic finishes. Wherever possible, I integrate energy-efficient lighting and maximize natural light to reduce energy consumption.

Additionally, incorporating greenery and designing with durability in mind ensures the spaces are not only beautiful but also responsible for the environment.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in interior design?

Minnie Bhatt: Stay curious and never stop learning. This field requires a balance of technical knowledge and creative expression, so invest time in understanding materials, trends, and design principles.

Develop resilience, as every project will present challenges, and learn to adapt and troubleshoot on-site. Most importantly, listen to your clients and respect their vision; great design comes from genuine collaboration.

Can you share a favorite piece of furniture or decor that you own and why itโ€™s special to you?

Minnie Bhatt: One of my favorite pieces of dรฉcor is a handcrafted tile I brought back from Vienna. I discovered it near a building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an architect whose work I deeply admire for its vibrant colors and organic, whimsical style. The tile reflects his unique artistic vision and immediately caught my eye.

Now displayed on a shelf in my office library, it brings a splash of Viennese charm to the space. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it holds sentimental value as a reminder of the inspiration I drew from that trip and the creativity that cities like Vienna exude.

Minnie Bhattโ€™s vision and dedication have undoubtedly set a new benchmark in the design industry. Her ability to seamlessly fuse contemporary styles with timeless elegance reflects her expertise and passion.

As we conclude our conversation, itโ€™s clear that her commitment to design excellence and her creative process continue to inspire the next generation of designers. Minnieโ€™s work is a true testament to the transformative power of thoughtful, visionary design.
