Krishnarao Jaisim: A Visionary in Indian Architectural Design

Krishnarao Jaisim is an architect and the former chairman of the Indian Institute of Architects, Karnataka Chapter. Fountainhead Jaisim has enjoyed the practice of architecture for over four decades now. His early years in the field were inspired by greats such as Buckminster Fuller, Koenigsberger and Geoffrey Bawa.

In the sixties, Ayn Randรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs The Fountainhead gave his aspirations a whole new meaning.His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Hindu, The Times of India, The Deccan Herald, and on HGTV.

Jaisim started Jaisim Fountainhead in 1970. Since then he has created and recreated innumerable homes, institutions and commercial enterprises. He has written more than 150 papers and articles, made about 1500 presentations, serves on several boards and councils, and finds time to interact with students of architecture all over India.

Early life

Jaisim was born in 1944. He completed his school education in 1960 from Madras Christian College School. Later in 1966, he completed his Bachelors of Architecture from Madras University.

Personal life

Jaisim married to Geeta in 1970. She is now the President of University Womenโ€™s Association. The couple have a daughter named Ashwini. She has studied MA in Psychology & is the member of IIID.

Career

After completing bachelors, he worked with the architectural firm of LM Chitale & Son, Madras. In 1970, as he was inspired by Ayn Randโ€™s novel, The Fountainhead, he started an architecture practice under the name โ€œJaisim-Fountainheadโ€.

The practice grew from 1970 to 1975. He won a National Competition for the Cochin Stadia, Presidents Nomination for the Small Industries Pavilion and the โ€˜TAJ Fishermanโ€™s Coveโ€™.

During 1975 to 1980, his firm began working overseas, and ventured into other areas of building, like the import and distribution of building materials, running scheduled contracts, and running a stone crusher and fabrication unit. In 1980 he returned to India and settled in Bangalore.

Still today, he continues to pursue the adventures of the built environment, searching and researching beyond the boundaries of time and space.

He has covered a variety of projects such as residences, institutes, corporates etc. His each and every project bears the unmistakable trademark of Jaisim. They are iconoclastic, individualistic & eco-friendly.
