An interview with Saumitra Bhatkhalkar and Sharmin Wade, founders of Studio SB, a Mumbai-based architecture and interior design studio
In the vibrant world of architecture and interior design, Saumitra Bhatkhalkar and Sharmin Wade stand out as visionary founders of Studio SB, a Mumbai-based studio renowned for its innovative and sustainable designs.
Their unique approach blends contemporary aesthetics with cultural nuances, creating spaces that resonate with both functionality and beauty.
What inspired you both to co-found Studio SB, and how did your individual backgrounds contribute to the studioโs vision?
The inception of Studio SB was born from a shared belief that design has the power to shape not just spaces, but experiences, identities, and communities.
For Saumitra Bhatkhalkar and Sharmin Wade, co-founding the studio was a natural extension of years of parallel exploration across architecture, interior design, and material innovation.
Saumitra, with his strong foundation in architecture and spatial design, brings a deep understanding of structure, scale, and form.
His experience working on large-scale architectural and urban design projects imbues the studio with a strategic and systems-based approach to space-making.Sharmin, on the other hand, comes from a background rooted in interior design and visual storytelling.
Her sensitivity to color, texture, and emotional resonance informs the studioโs intimate, human-centered design language.
How would you describe the design philosophy of Studio SB, and what key principles guide your architectural and interior design projects?
Studio SBโs design philosophy is centered around narrative-driven, contextually rooted design that balances form, function, and feeling.
Guided by principles of material honesty, human-centric planning, and quiet minimalism, the studio crafts spaces that are both emotionally resonant and functionally efficient.
Each project reflects a deep respect for its cultural and physical context, with a focus on timeless aesthetics, tactile richness, and thoughtful storytelling.
Whether through architecture or interiors, Studio SB designs with the intent to create spaces that are not just seen, but deeply experienced.
Can you share some of the most memorable projects youโve worked on at Studio SB and what made them stand out?
One of our most memorable projects was Reverie : Sky City, a 3BHK- converted into a 2BHK to maximise living areas, the design offered a balance between spaces without much effort.
With a neutral palette, the residence was minimal yet elegant and curated a warm shell with cosiness for the occupants to sink in ultimate comfort.
Believing the philosophy of โWe must be as modern as the possibilities of our timeโ by Mies Van Der Rohe, the living area was divided into three zones- the formal living area, lounge area and dining area.
This multi-functional approach met the demands of modern lifestyles while evoking the personality of the occupants.
By utilising the full potential of wall surfaces, closed and hidden storage solutions were integrated into the design. Every element was thoughtfully crafted to complement one another, creating a cohesive look.
How do you approach the balance between functionality and aesthetics in your designs?
For us, functionality and aesthetics are never in conflict; they are two sides of the same coin. Our design process begins with understanding how a space will be used, how people move through it, and what it needs to support both practically and emotionally.
Once the functional framework is established, we layer in materials, textures, and light to elevate the experience without compromising usability.
We believe that beauty lies in clarity and intention, so every aesthetic decision we make whether itโs a curve in a wall, a choice of finish, or a custom detail is rooted in purpose.
Ultimately, our goal is to create spaces that not only look refined but work effortlessly in daily life.
What role does sustainability play in your design process, and how do you incorporate eco-friendly practices into your projects?
Sustainability is a foundational layer in our design thinking not as an add-on, but as an integrated mindset that informs every stage of our process.
We prioritize the use of locally sourced materials, natural finishes, and craft-based techniques that reduce environmental impact while celebrating regional identity.
A project that truly reflects this ethos is the Alibaug Residence, where we worked extensively with reclaimed teakwood, lime plaster walls, and locally crafted terracotta tiles to minimize carbon footprint and support local artisans.
Designed as a warm holiday home for a modern nuclear family of four people, set on the blissful and breezy sands of Alibaug, the focal point of the creative endeavour for Studio SB lay in its strategical nuances.
What advice would you give to aspiring architects and designers looking to establish their own studios?
Our advice to aspiring architects and designers looking to start their own studios is simply build your practice on authenticity, not aesthetics alone. Take the time to understand your design voice, and donโt be afraid to start small.
Every project, no matter the scale, is an opportunity to learn, grow, and define your approach. Focus on clarity of thought, consistency in process, and the courage to question norms.
Surround yourself with collaborators who challenge and inspire you, and stay curiousย about materials, people, and the world around you.
Most importantly, remember that design is not just about what you create, but the experience you leave behind. A meaningful practice takes time, patience, and a deep belief in your vision nurture it with intent.
As we conclude our conversation, Saumitra and Sharminโs passion for design and commitment to excellence shine through, inspiring a new generation of architects and designers to reimagine the spaces we inhabit.
